Recommendations

In December 2012 the partners finalised a survey paper on the involvement of older professionals and experts into the innovation activities of start-ups, students and pupils. The paper contains ten country reports, short interviews with young founders and students and how-to-guides for innovative companies / project teams as well as older experts to inform them about the advantages of the involvement of best agers in innovation activities.

The key findings and recommendations of the authors were as follows:

  • The experience and knowledge of professionals aged 55+ are valued highly by young entrepreneurs in all countries. In particular, emphasis was placed on
    • the practical and theoretical experience of older professionals which allows them to view situations in perspectives, to foresee potential flaws and mistakes and find best solutions.
    • The extensive professional and personal networks of best ager experts, which can help young entrepreneurs to find potential investors, customers and cooperation partners.
  • The use of older experts' resources could be improved in the development of supportive environments such as business incubator activities and educational and training programmes for young entrepreneurs. This has already been tested in different pilot initiatives in the Best Agers project.
  • It would also be of great value to support young entrepreneurs and older experts in establishing contacts and networks outside of formal relationships, as informal mentorship and joint leisure time help to overcome communicational barriers and avoid misunderstandings which are based on different approaches and attitudes to business and management issues, work rhythm etc
  • Further and differentiated research, e.g. on innovative management methods or applied technologies is recommended.
